  1. Nothing new about torture in American prisons. Arkansas didn't ban flogging until the 1980s. Reprehensible and deserving of harsh punishment? Absolutely. “Un-American”? No more so than Gitmo or any other example of officially approved sadism in the name of “national security.” Our government has rarely, if ever, lived up to the mythic ideal–something “the Left” has acknowledged and fought forever, while “the Right” defended every form of abuse, discrimination, and rogue “law enforcement.”

    LOL. You do realize that you're making this blanket statement in response to a conservative denouncing it, right?

    I found this story through Radley Balko's blog, and Balko is no liberal.

    By the way, the Prison Rape elimination Act was passed by a Republican Congress and signed into law by a Republican President in 2003. That President was George W. Bush.
