"Excited delirium"

The deaths of people experiencing “excited delirium” in police custody is a real issue, but it is unfair to blame Taser for the deaths. They provide a less-lethal option for law enforcement to use. They are not to blame for someone misusing their product any more than automobile manufacturers are to blame for drunk driving.

Even cops have stopped calling it “nonlethal,” in the recognition that Tasers kill in a wide variety of circumstances determined by who receives and who administers the shocks. Needless to say, no one on Earth blames auto manufacturers for drunk driving, a typical right-wing “straw man” argument that demeans your commentary.

As to the product, it is not safe in the hands of untrained, ignorant, or rogue police (recalling that courts have now banned IQ tests for prospective police), and it is not enough to have cops parrot the line we've heard more than once in the past 12 months, excusing their excesses on grounds that they're “not doctors.” If they can't handle their weapons properly, first fire and imprison all those abusing them. If that fails, withdraw Tasers from the field entirely. Countless cops got by just fine without them in the bygone age “conservatives” allegedly adore.

That's an overreaction. Tasers are still safer for the person being subdued than firearms or batons.

The big issue here was that this woman was restrained and still shocked. That's an excessive force issue no matter what was used on her – baton, pepper spray or Taser.
