Is the Wuhan Virus a judgment from God?

Here is an uncomfortable prospect that Christians need to think about: We should not ignore the possibility that Coronavirus is a judgment from God for our wickedness. There are examples all through Scripture of exactly this kind of thing. Here are a few examples:

  • Numbers 25:1-9
  • Numbers 16:42-49
  • 1 Chronicles 21:7-15
  • 1 Corinthians 11:27-30

It is easy for us to see God’s hand in blessings, but reject the thought of temporal earthly judgment. We often bristle at the idea that God would punish us in this life for the way we live, but that mentality is just not Biblical. Furthermore, it makes no logical sense that we would see and point out God’s agency in blessings, but reject that God could be involved in in hardship, disease, pain and economic difficulty.

We live in a very wicked time. We have massacred 60 million unborn babies, we have rejected God’s boundaries for sexual intimacy, we are engaged in church less with each passing generation, and we are incredibly wealthy. Look around your house and think of all the luxuries you have that would have been unthinkable in 1975, and how much less expensive technology is today. We are extremely proud, and God resists the proud. (James 4:6)

Am I saying that the Wuhan Virus absolutely is a judgment from God? No, I am not. I simply do not know. But it would not be unusual, nor would it be a departure from the God we see in both the Old Testament and the New Testament. The Wuhan Virus gives us an opportunity to reflect on our own mortality and how a microscopic organism can totally upend the world.

Most importantly, this is a call to repent of our sins, fall at the foot of the Cross and ask the Lord Jesus Christ for forgiveness. This is an unprecedented time, and also an unprecedented opportunity for revival. We must not allow this opportunity to slip through our fingers.

Repent and believe today, turn from your sin and follow God.
